Craft of the Past, Created Today for Your Future...

Mokume translates from Japanese as "wood eye" which refers to burl wood grain and gane means "metal".  Today mokume refers to any pattern made in this Japanese lamination technique.   During the samurai era, mokume gane was used to make parts of the handle for the samurai's sword but today it is used to create traditional and contemporary jewelry.

Jim has worked in mokume for over 20 years developing his technique and designs.  After extensive research on mokume and metallurgy, he developed his own method for making mokume. Sheets of platinum, gold, and silver alloys are expertly fused together. The fused billet of metal is then forged and carved to create the unique patterns in the metal. For more information on this technique, see "The Story of Mokume Gane"

All of our mokume laminates with their unique patterns and textures are created by Jim in his studio.
